Art lovers: don’t overlook the cemeteries of Paris in your search for the City of Light’s most impressive art and sculpture.
Closest to our Paris apartment, Le Trésor de Montmartre, is the Montmartre Cemetery. This ornate 25-acre cemetery was built below street level in the hollow of an old quarry, and is within walking distance of the apartment, at the end of rue Caulaincourt toward Place de Clinchy.
Other Parisian cemetaries we recommend are Pere Lachaise (the city’s largest and most visited and the resting place for many famous artists, musicians and thinkers, like Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison) and Montparnasse. At Montparnasse, you can view the gravesites for Paris existentialists Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, among other famous intellectuals.
